How it started

Updated: Aug 6, 2022

My journey to being a Personal Trainer was not linear, although I always had an interest in sports whilst growing up - be it playing in baseball teams, kickboxing, dirt bike riding, snowboarding or surfing; I never thought that being active, and movement could be a career path.

I spent my first few years out of school as a plumber. The work was hard. Long days and it was really physical. I was destined to get experience and build my way up the ranks...until I hurt my back. I had to take weeks off work and saw a physiotherapist frequently just to get back to being mobile. And that's where my interest in the body began.

I started to question how the body works, how I needed to heal, what I could do to fast-track the process and importantly, how could I set myself up to prevent this happening again?

Taking the leap into personal training

At the time of getting into personal training it was quite an unusual career path. I feel like I started just before the fitness boom came to Australia.. we're talking over 13 years ago. Today becoming a personal trainer is common, and some courses make it a lot easier to get into training, which influences the industry I work in.

Since changing careers, I have not only become super confident in my methods, I have developed my own philosophy which I've used time and time again to see my clients achieve their fitness and health goals.

Benefits of my work

The best part of my day is hearing my clients talk about feeling confident in their bodies. Being able to put on the bikini during summer and feel amazing, or fit when they run the beep test to become a firefighter, or even that training sets their mind up for a successful day. There are so many benefits from training and I love being able to be part of my clients lives in such a positive way.

The other elements of being a trainer is the diversity I have. I do like planning out my week and being really organised, and I also don't mind the change in schedule so not everyday is the same. This flexibility allows me to live a life that I want, see family and friends throughout the week, and soak up the sun in the middle of the day. This helps me show up as my best self at work.

Working in this field really fulfils me, and because I practice what I preach, it makes it really easy to see and feel the benefits that training has in living a healthy lifestyle.

I hope this gave you a little insight to me and why I show up each day. I'm really looking forward to sharing more with you whether it's health or fitness tips, benefits and information to support you on your health journey.

Till next time,

Deano
